From Side Hustle to Smart Choice

Hey everyone, welcome back to the blog! Last time, I introduced this space as a platform to share learnings and experiences in the IT world. Today, I wanted to share my newest business venture within the IT field.

Let's face it, I am not a 9-5 guy. The reason I didn't go to college was because I didn't wanna be stuck working a normal job every day of my life, I wanted the freedom to do what I want. Maybe it's the creative freedom, the chance to build something of your own, or simply the desire to put your ever-growing tech knowledge to good use. That's exactly what motivated me to launch my own IT consulting business on the side.

The Humble Beginnings: Networks and Support for Local Businesses

My background is in IT, and I've always said the only skill an IT personnel needs is the problem solving capability. So, it made sense to leverage that expertise to help others. I started small, focusing on local businesses that needed help with network setup and maintenance. This niche was perfect – the demand was high, and the tasks were familiar territory for me.

Expanding the Horizon: Homes, Families, and Esports Dreams

As my client base grew, I realized there was a whole other world of needs out there. Families often struggle with everyday tech woes, from troubleshooting printers to setting up parental controls. This led me to offer home-based technical support, a service that proved to be much in demand.

But here's where things got interesting. I work at a school district that has an esports team, and many other school districts in Texas are coming along and have an esports team aswell. Well the parents that are buying the kids these computers are going for the cheapest computer they can find on Best Buys website which doesn't help the kid and in the end just wastes money for the family. Many aspiring gamers struggle to find the perfect esports gear at a reasonable price. So, I broadened my offerings to include consultations on finding high-quality equipment that fits their budget. The bonus? Helping them set it all up for peak performance (and that oh-so-important aesthetic edge).

Beyond the Basics: Lighting and Infrastructure

The beauty of IT consulting is its versatility. My skillset extends beyond software and networks. I've also honed my expertise in setting up complex lighting systems for businesses and homes, creating the perfect ambiance or highlighting architectural features. And let's not forget the ever-reliable ethernet cable – I've become a pro at running them through houses, ensuring a seamless wired connection throughout.

The Key Takeaways: It's All About Finding Your Niche

Looking back, the key to launching a successful side hustle (and eventually, a potentially full-time gig!) was identifying specific niches within the broad world of IT consulting. By focusing on areas where my skills aligned with a clear client need, I was able to build a reputation and a loyal customer base.

What's Next?

This blog is just the beginning. In future posts, I'll be diving deeper into the specifics of each service I offer – from network security best practices for businesses to creating the ultimate esports battlestation. So, stay tuned for actionable tips and tricks to help you navigate the ever-evolving world of technology!
